Cloth Diapering Around the World

Cloth Diapering in Japan
By Amanda

About two months ago, I began cloth diapering my now 8 month old daughter. I took an interest in cloth diapering when my 2 year old was having a hard time potty training and I was sick of constantly buying diapers. As well, with two children in diapers, I hated all the waste. I felt like I our trash can was filling up every day with just diapers. I never considered actually cloth diapering here in Japan until a friend of mine got a diaper cover from a local Japanese department store as a baby shower gift. My concern with cloth diapering here in Japan was that I would have to order products online in the states and have them shipped to Japan. If I didn’t like a product, I would have to try another product, and again have it shipped. This seemed like a tedious and potentially expensive and timely process so I looked into buying Japanese cloth diapering products to see how I liked them.

I started out with 2 diaper covers and 5 cloth inserts. Day one was going great and I was really enjoying cloth diapering until a very messy diaper happened. I admit I got a bit discouraged but decided to give it a few more days. After a few days, I really got into it, and was even figuring out how to handle the messy diapers. I went back to the local Japanese kids store and bought 6 more diaper covers and 20 more cloth inserts. I also ordered a few helpful items from back in the states including a wet bag and some stain remover spray to help with the messy diapers.
The drawbacks I have found to the cloth diapering products here in Japan is that the diaper covers are either pink or blue. They have some wonderful prints, however, I would like some gender neutral covers for future children that I may have. Also, all of the diaper covers are very similar between brands. They all require a cloth insert and they all have the same Velcro fastening system. Back in the states, there are several different types of cloth diapers and several different types of fasting systems. It would have been great to have a little bit more variety here in Japan. And finally, the last drawback I have is with the cloth inserts. While I love how soft/absorbent they are, it is a bit inconvenient that they shrink. They are hang dry only so when I take them out of the wash, I spend a bit of time stretching them out. I know as my child grows, I am going to have to stretch them out even more.

Overall though, I really do like the Japanese cloth diapering products that I have and have had no real problems with them. I really have nothing to compare them to since they are all that I have tried and are all that are available here which is partially why I sent a diaper cover and cloth inserts to Leyna to review for me. I wanted to know how they compare to the products in the states so when I have to buy the next size of diaper covers, I will have an idea of what is the best and what may best go with the cloth inserts that I have.

*edited to add: Amanda and her family were (and still are) stationed at Misawa Air Force Base when the 9.0 earthquake and tsunami struck Japan. Their home sustained minor damage due to falling picture frames, etc. and were without power and running water for a few days. **HAPPENING NOW**

**This is a repost to give you all the heads up.**

Baby Half Off is teaming up with AppleCheeks Reusable Diapers to sell their "Little Bundles" at a discounted price. I read about this "steal" on their blog: http://blog.applecheeks.com/posts/2011/3/8/a-little-heads-up-for-you.html?utm_source=twitterfeed&utm_medium=facebook. Little Bundles normally run around $28 for both the envelope cover and insert, so more than likely that $28 price will be cut in half.

This is an amazing deal for such an amazing product. P-man loves his AppleCheeks dipe, and I highly recommend them. The fit is so comfortable on him, especially the elastic waste in the back and up front (where he needs the most room). The insert is very absorbent as well.

Anyway, I wanted to give all my readers the heads up. I have no idea when they will put up this steal, so please keep your eyes peeled to their website. Ready, set, DEAL!!!!!!!!!

And The Winner Is....

After punching in 1-81 into the random.org widget on the bottom right hand of my blog...The winner of the Plum Crazy For Cloth giveaway is:

Plum Crazy For Cloth Review and Giveaway

**NOW CLOSED**

A few months ago, I began researching and looking into a fun airplane shirt and diaper for P-man to wear for photos and to his birthday party. I remembered a good friend of mine mentioned she was starting to sew diapers for her WAHM (Work At Home Mom) business. I decided to seek her out to see if she could do something fun and custom for P-man's special day.

Kate, over at Plum Crazy For Cloth custom designed a raglan airplane shirt and a one size minky pocket diaper with zorb insert using the Landing Zone Airplanes & Rockets pattern. The shirt was extremely soft and loved that it matched the diaper.
ABOUT THE DIAPER: This Plum Crazy For Cloth diaper is a one-size minky pocket diaper with a zorb insert. Some of you maybe scratching your head and wondering what is a zorb insert?
DiaperMaker Zorb™ is a specialty textile designed to reduce cost and improve performance of reusable cloth diapers and
accessory products. ZORB absorbs 10x it's weight in less than half a second -- that's 20x faster than cotton, bamboo or hemp. Zorb has incredible holding power too, a single layer holds up to 3 times the moisture of the best absorbing knits so leaking and exterior wicking can be reduced or eliminated.
ZORB can be washed using home or industrial equipment and additives. It absorbency is not effected by hard water or with natural detergent deposits diaper-stripping to regain absorbency is virtually eliminated.
This diaper also has strong snaps on the waist and on the rise to give you that snug fit. It also has good elasticity along the sides of the diaper and along the back. The inner lining of the diaper is made from a minky fabric, which makes for a softer more comfortable fit for baby.

MY FIRST IMPRESSION: I love the pattern and fabric of the outer part of the diaper, it made it look very sleek. The inner lining minky fabric was incredibly soft. I did notice the fact the diaper seemed a little small for a one-size, which means P-man will probably outgrow this dipe before he reaches 30 lbs. However, it did fit pretty snug and had maximum coverage, which is great on a baby with a large bottom and chunky thighs.

Zorb Insert

ABSORBENCY:The zorb insert makes this diaper extremely absorbent, which is perfect for those heavy wetters or for use during the overnight. I will add though, P-man has yet to go past 6 hours in this diaper, so right now I can't tell you if the absorbency would last up to 12 hours or not. I can tell you that there were no signs of leaks up to 6 hours.

OVERALL IMPRESSION: I love this diaper! It was great being able to choose the type of pattern, insert, and fabric. The fit, durability, and absorbency of this diaper stands up to a very active 1-year-old. The care instructions for this diaper are super easy, and it can be used in the dryer. In fact, the more often you wash and dry the more absorbent this diaper becomes. Again, the only negative thing I have to say is... I wish there was another set of snaps on the rise, because I'm not sure if this diaper will make last until 30 lbs.

As you can see, Kate doesn't only make diapers, but she can custom design shirts and other clothing wear. She also makes wool dryer balls, cloth wipes, aprons, wet bags, blankets, etc. Definitely stop by her Facebook fan page: Plum Crazy for Cloth or the hyenacart store website she uses to check out her latest projects: Peace, Love, and Cloth For All Congo.

***Kate has graciously offered to host a giveaway to go along with my review. She will giveaway either a dozen cloth wipes, 6 unpaper towels, a pair of dryer balls, a changing pad, or a diaper to one lucky winner.***

The Week Ahead...

Here are a few things I have planned for the upcoming week:
  • My hubby's perspective on cloth diapering
  • Review on a minky pocket diaper with a zorb insert made by Plum Crazy for Cloth
  • Fluff around-the-world, taking a look at a cover and inserts sent to me from Japan
  • An update on the cooties
  • Motherly Support, Don't Judge!
Of course, I'm still planning on the "wordless Wednesday" and "Flashback Friday" posts. Now that everyone's healthy (tap on screen) and I'm not planning a birthday party/family coming into town, I can finally get back into blogging. Thanks so much for being patient with me. I hope you all are enjoying your weekend.

Fluff Friday

Fluff Tag Questioner

1. Why did you start cloth diapering?

I started cloth diapering primarily to save money. I couldn't believe the amount of money that we spent on disposables just to be thrown away. I found some really good deals on www.babyhalfoff.com and www.ecobabybuys.com and was able to start my cloth diaper stash without spending a ton of money. I couldn't believe how much we are saving (future blog post). Of course, helping the environment and lack of diaper rashes on P-man is an added plus!

2. When did you start cloth diapering (what age)?

I started cloth diapering when P-man was almost 8 months-old. It's a little later than normal, but it's never too late to start cloth diapering.

3. What is your favorite thing about cloth diapering?

I love shopping for new fluff. I just go nuts at all the different brands, types, colors, patterns, etc. It's seriously like purchasing a brand new pair of shoes (Here is my post regarding that: Fluff is the New Jimmy Choo) Plus, a baby booty covered in fluff has to be one of the cutest things ever.

4. Do you match your cloth diapers with your child's outfits?

Not really, however if he just hangs out in his fluff all day, I try and coordinate baby legs. :)

5. What is your favorite brand of cloth diapers?

bumGenius 4.0 one size pocket diaper. It's super absorbent, and I haven't had to strip them yet. It also happens to be the hubster's favorite dipe as well.

6. What is your favorite website to buy from?

7. How do you organize your cloth diapers?

I have a storage tote from Thirty-One where I keep the fluff I use the most, and that's stored downstairs. The other dipes are stored upstairs in P-man's dresser. I'm hoping to get a closet organizer to put all the fluff into, so it's a little more organized, but it's a work in progress.

8. One size or perfect size?

Perfect size in the Fuzzibunz, because it fits way better compared to the one size Fuzzibunz, plus it has a longer and thicker insert. With the bumGenius brand, both the one size and the perfect size(bumGenius 3.0 AIOs), seem to fit P-man perfectly. If I was to choose the best one size, it would be bumGenius and for perfect size, it would be Fuzzibunz.

9. Gender specific or gender neutral colors?

I have an array of both in my collection. However, I think the gender specific takes more precedence over the gender neutral colors (I have tons of blue). Plus, if we do have a third baby, it will more than likely be another boy. ;)

10. Who inspired you or how did you get into cloth diapering?

Quite a few people inspired me, the lovely ladies at the Cloth Diaper Channel over on YouTube helped a ton, plus a few friends here locally. I'm so grateful for my local friends, because they were able to not only point in me in the right direction as to what to purchase, but let me try some of their cloth dipes on P-man as well.

**Feel Free to tag this questioner, because I would love to know your answers. Please link back if you can, so I know you did one.**

It's been a busy few days...

Wow, it's been a very busy few days. A lot has gone on, and I will fill you all in very soon. So, I will make a long story short... Friday, Jesse was off, so we ran some errands, and I got a brand new laptop (MacBook Pro). Saturday, my girlfriends and I made a trip to Columbus to meet the Pioneer Woman, Ree Drummond. Today, has been as busy with church and brunch. I was't able to make it out to the nurse-in, but a friend of mine has offered to write up a small post about the event as a "guest blogger". Speaking of "guest bloggers", a friend from high school is living in Japan (her hubby is in the United States Air Force) and offered to send me a few prefolds and covers made of course by Japanese manufacturers. She also agreed to be a "guest blogger" and talk about her experiences cloth diapering in Japan. I can't wait!!!!!

So, stay tuned for some fun and informative blog posts. Oh, and I almost forgot. "3 Men and a Lady" will be launching a brand new layout design, button, and header. You will have to tell me how you like it. I can't wait until it's done.

Until then...

Fluff Review

I thought it would be a fun idea to go through all the diapers we own and do a quick little review on each of them. I will post one pro and one con to each (that is if I can find a con). As of right now, we are up to 29 diapers, 2 Thirsties duo diapers(size 2), 2 Thirsties duo wraps(size 2), 3 BumGenius 4.0 snap pocket diapers (one size), 4 BumGenius 3.0 hook and loop AIO (large), 1 Happy Heinys hook and loop pocket diaper(one size), 2 Tiny Tush snap fitted AIO(one size), 5 unbleached Indian prefolds(medium), 2 GroVia snap AIO (one size), 1 FuzziBunz snap pocket (one size), 7 FuzziBunz snap pocket perfect size(medium). Out of those 29 diapers, we are able to use 24 of them, because the prefolds are currently too small to use as a diaper. However, they work perfect as an insert for extra protection.

Thirsties Duo Wrap: This is a pretty decent cover. I like the leg gussets on the side, which help provide superior protection against leaks. The pattern is flashy (Cool Stripe). and the fit is perfect for P-man's shape. I really don't have anything negative to say. I wish it got more use, as I don't have very many fitted and our prefolds are currently too small. I would highly recommend this cover.

Thirsties Duo Diaper: Instead of being just a cover. This Diaper contains a two-piece diapering system combining an absorbent insert and a waterproof sleeve diaper a.k.a a pocket diaper. Again, this is a fabulous diaper that helps prevent leaks and is super absorbent. It's a bit bulky and I prefer snaps of the hook and loop (velcro closure).

FuzziBunz One Size Pocket Diaper: This is a one sized diaper, so it grows with your baby from 7-35 lbs. This diaper also comes with two different sized inserts. It's a pretty snug fit due to the button-adjusted waist and leg casings. Not only are there a variety of snap settings available, but the leg casings adjust to 8+ button settings and the waist adjusts to 4+ button settings. However, I do believe the perfect size medium seems to be a more "comfortable" fit compared to the one size.

Fuzzibunz Perfect Size Pocket Diaper: I have nothing nothing bad to say about this diaper. This was our first ever cloth diaper purchase due to all the rave reviews. This is a perfect size medium, which fits from 15 - 30 lbs. It comes with one microfiber insert that slides easily into the pocket opening. P-man has yet to leak out of this diaper, and that's with only one insert. This diaper seems to hold onto the ammonia smell compared to others, which has resulted in more "stripping".

BumGenius 3.0 AIO : This is a large sized diaper, which fits from 22-30 lbs. My husband really enjoys the All In Ones over the pockets, because there is no stuffing of inserts (that is if you don't need the added leak protection). This pretty much goes on like a normal 'sposie and very easy to use. Again, not a huge fan of the hook and loop, because of the added wear and tear. This is probably the least bulky of all the diapers in our collection.

BumGenius One Size 4.0 Pocket Diaper: This diaper is new from BumGenius. It's a one sized diaper with snap closures (instead of the hook and loop listed above). The snap closures are flexible and stretchy to help provide a more custom fit. This diaper also comes with two different type of inserts, one for newborns and the other for older babies. The top has a waterproof leakage stopper, which helps prevent leaking at the top of the diaper (perfect for little boys). Nothing bad to say, except the hubby can get frustrated putting this diaper on P-man.

Happy Heinys One Size Pocket Diaper: This is one of my favorite diapers (not because of the adorable Owl print). This has to be the most comfortable diaper on P-man's bottom. It's a one size diaper that fits from 8-35 lbs. Again, comes with two inserts, which can be added for extra protection, which we've had to use. It seems if P-man is in this diaper for a longer period of time, it's more prone to leak. This is another hook and loop closure, but it's more thick and seems more durable compared to the others. Besides the leakage, this diaper is pretty bulky, and only fits under super stretchy pants.

GroVia One Size AIO: The diaper is another all in one (hubby's favorite) and has snap closures. It's a one size, and is supposed to fit a baby from 10 lbs until 35 lbs. However, it seems to have a pretty snug fit, already on the largest setting for P-man. I'm afraid he will outgrow this diaper before he potty trains. I do like how this diaper comes with a snap in soaker option for extra absorbency, did I mention it's organic cotton!? All-in all a pretty decent diaper, but not one of my personal favorites.

Tiny Tush One Size Fitted Diaper: This diaper is a one size diaper fitting a newborn to 35 lbs. It's made out of 100% cotton and will need to be covered (we use the Thirsties duo wrap cover that was mentioned at the beginning of this review). It comes with a snap in liner for extra protection, which is great. If you line dry, this is the perfect diaper for you, for being a cotton diaper, it dries pretty rapidly. We haven't had any leak issues with P-man, but we don't use this diaper consistently. It pretty much gets use when all my other diapers are in the laundry. It does get pretty bulky with the cover, but again, does a fabulous job protecting against leaks.

Unbleached Indian Prefold: These are your "traditional" cloth diapers, the ones you parents and grandparents used. These will needed to be folded to your liking, and then can be closed with either a Snappi or a safety pin followed by a type of cover for protection. For being one flat sheet of cotton, they are pretty absorbent and extremely soft. We only used these when we first started cloth diapering P-man, and were tricky to use at first. However, with more and more practice you get to be a pro and folding these. If you have a squirmy baby and a hubby who gets confused easily, I would more than likely skip these and go straight to either a pocket diaper or all in one.

Well, those are all the different types of fluff that we own. I hope this helped you all in trying to decide what's best for you and your baby. I'm definitely looking forward to trying out the AppleCheeks brand, as I won a $10 gift card in a giveaway. So, stay tuned for another review. Hooray for fluff!

**This review comes directly from my own personal experiences and my opinion is that of my own. I was not paid or compensated in any form for this review. All the diapers shown were purchased by me**

Fluff is the new Jimmy Choo

Okay, so I've actually never owned a pair of Jimmy Choo shoes. However, it seems as my addiction to accessories...purses...shoes, etc has been replaced by my addiction for cloth diapers. Coach, Nordstroms, Victoria's Secret websites have been pushed down to the bottom with Kelly's Closet, Cotton Babies, and various cloth diapering blogs being at the top of my list now. If there was a Fluff Anonymous, I would totally be attending meetings, in fact, I may even be president! My husband can contest to my excitement every time I see a new pattern, color, or fluff on sale!

We are almost to our 3 month cloth diapering anniversary, and making the switch from 'sposies has been the best decision I could have ever made. I love researching the different brands, the different types, the colors, and where I can find amazing deals. It's an obsession really. I look at my stash from 3 months ago, and it was quite pathetic, but now I have almost 20 diapers now. Fuzzibunz, BumGenius (AIO's and pockets), Happy Heinys, GroVia AIO, prefolds, Thirstie covers, Tiny Tush fitted, are amongst our collection and under $200. Over half of our fluff was bought at 50% off. It's definitely an investment, but isn't almost anything that's going to last for a long time (and of amazing quality)? We have yet to find a cloth diaper that leaks or is an uncomfortable fit for P-man (if I find one, I will definitely let you know). We still haven't tried any WAHM diapers, but will hopefully soon be adding one or two or three to our collection.

I may not have a closet filled with Jimmy Choo, but I have a baby boy who is stylin' in his fluff. There is nothing wrong with a fluff butt!

How to wash cloth diapers...

...in a front loader washer and dryer.

I made a quick "how to" video on how we wash our fluff. Be prepared for a lot of rambling and some shaky video (I tried my best to keep the Flip steady). Anyway, let me know if you have any questions, because I would be happy to answer them.

GroVia AIO One-Sized Cloth Diaper

Today, I'm going to show you a quick video on how to change a baby using a GroVia AIO one-sized cloth diaper. I'm also going to include a review on the diaper, so you all get an idea on how we are liking this particular cloth diaper. I'm hoping to continue making these short videos with each brand/type of the fluff we own followed by a review. Hopefully, this will help you all decide what type of cloth diaper works for you and your baby. Feel free to leave any questions or comments in the provided comment section.

I have never really heard of GroVia, until I entered to win a giveaway over at The Cloth Diaper Whisperer. I heard about their hybrid diapers, but had no idea they made an all-in-one. A week after I entered the giveaway, I found out I had won (out of 1100 entries). I was so excited to learn I won, because I'm so open minded when it comes to cloth diapering. I'm willing to try just about anything(except for gDiapers) and winning this giveaway gave me an opportunity to try something new. I received two GroVia diapers in the mail two weeks later, one color was Vanilla and the other Ice. They have some other cute prints that I like, especially the "Owls" print.

In case some of you are wondering, an "all-in-one" cloth diaper is a diaper that is pretty much ready to wear without having to worry about stuffing a pocket with an insert or liner, pinning/snapping a fitted or prefold, etc. My husband is a huge fan of this type of diaper, because it doesn't require too much thinking, it's also easy for a baby who doesn't sit still. I do like how the GroVia has the snap in soaker option for extra absorbency, did I mention it's organic cotton!? It's pretty easy to size, as it is a one-sized cloth diaper, but I'm a little worried it won't fit once we get to the potty-training stage. The diaper is supposed to fit a baby from 10 lbs until 35 lbs. However, with the way it fits P-man now, I'm not sure if this diaper is something that will last him until he reaches 35 lbs. That's another thing, just because it says it fits up to a certain amount of weight, you also need to take inconsideration of the size around baby's waste, buttocks, and thighs.

Besides fit, I really don't have any complaints about this diaper. It's super absorbent, so we've never had any problems with leaks (would make for a perfect overnight option). It only took four wash and dry cycles to prepare the diaper for use with no repelling issues. It's a nice trim and soft diaper, and would highly recommend this brand to anyone.
